  • Error: Failed to open wireless networking device

    Hello,

    we have installed the latest version of WirelessMon 4.0 Built 1005 on a Terminal running Windows XP SP2 embedded on our forklifts. We did this to investigate problems in our WLAN-environment as our forklifts use an Online-SAP-Transaction and we discovered breakdowns in the WLAN-connections from time to time.

    However, the WirelessMon can not be started on the terminals. It stops displaying an error-message "Failed to open the wireless networking device".

    When we disable the "Wireless Zero Configuration Service", the WirelessMon can be started, however, we are no longer able to connect to the WLAN.

    I have attached the log-file from your WirlessMon hoping this would give any hint that prevents the program to run.

    In order for WirelessMon to have access to the network card the Wireless Zero Configuration service must be disabled. You should still be able to connect to networks via WirelessMon by double clicking them in the summary list or the connect button on the toolbar.

    The exception being if you are using WPA2 or enterprise encryption, as this requires extra authentication steps that Wirelessmon cannot perform. If the manufacturer of the network card provides a connection/management utility this can usually be used to connect to such an access point while WirlessMon is running.

    However, you don't have to be connected to an access point to see the signal strength as it will be listed on the summary tab along with the other available networks.

      Hi Tim,

      thank you for your reply.

      We tried to switch off the ZeroConfiguration-Service. The WirelessMon ist starting then, however, no WLAN-Accesspoints are displayed, so a connection can not be established.

      The WLAN-Card we are using is a summit SDC-PC10G-card using the latest driver provided by the manufacturer.

      Is there anything else we can configure or chang to get WirelessMon running in this scenario?

        There are several errors logged above though they appear to be related to not being able to gain access the network card on start up, the above log appears to have been created after the WZC service was stopped, is this correct?

        Are you able to use the network card through the windows network connection dialog and system tray notification or do you have to use a client utility provided by Summit?
