very low MegaFLOPS results

My Pc is P4 - 2400, 512 mb Ram
and so on. The problem is that the total score is around 300 pts, but the MegaFlops result is 170 - 190.
Does anybody know what might cause this and how I can deal with it. Is it software or hardware problem?

I assume you are using version 4 of PerformanceTest. This is now an old version of the software.

Never the less 190 is not such a bad score. My P4 2.8Ghz HT machine got a result of 210.

The MegaFLOPS test runs in multiple threads. In V4 this was the only test that ran in multiple threads and could take advantage of multiple CPUs. (In V5 this has changed and all the CPU tests run in multiple threads).

Because MegaFLOPS used multiple threads, the result can be greatly influenced by have multiple CPUs and having hyperthreaded (HT) CPUs. HT can actually have a positive or negative influence depending on how the software was written. Have a look at this article for a discussion of HT and impact it can have,
