NVidia release a lot of different dirver versions. That's why they are now up to the 44th major release of their drivers. Many of these releases have various different bugs in them.
Can you try going to the Driver Archive (link below)
http://www.nvidia.com/view.asp?IO=win9x_archive
and trying an older release of the drivers, preferably a WHQL release as these should have been better tested.
We did test PerformanceTest with under Windows 98 with GeForce cards, but with ealier versions of the nVidia drivers, and there was no problem.
If you could let me know the result that would be great. If earlier drivers correct the problem we can advise people to fall back, if it doesn't fix the problem we can do some deeper investigation.

Additional info:
It now seems almost sure that the 44.03 release of the nVidia drivers have a bug in them. As far as we know the bug in only on Windows98 with DirectX9, but it might also affect XP and 2000 and other versions for DirectX.
The bug as been reported (so far) on GeForce4 and GeForce3 cards. It is reasonable to expect that this fault might affect all nVidia cards that use the 44.03 drivers.
It has also been confirmed that going back to the ealier NVidia 41.09 release fixes the problem.

[/quote] It's amazing to see Win 98 or even SE surviving for -- really -- more than five years. I think Microsoft supports it passively but well on the Knowledge Base and WindowsUpdate. But compared to XP, 2000 Pro or even -- rest in peace -- NT 4.0 sp6.x, Win 98 and for that matter SE is a slug on Pentium-4 architecture and memory. Nobody even imagined a Pentium 4 when 98 was released -- what was it? -- August, 1998?
So forgive me if I'm still stuck on the nVidia chipset and their -- yes -- their latest drivers. "Coolbits". [Ah, Beavis, ah . . . cooool . . . . ah " "Heh-heh. Heh-heh. Yeah. Cool. Heh."
Still need those '98-stub DOS boot disks from time to time, though. Or an oldies-CD-ROM with "command.com" in the root directory.

Change to ATI. I owned one NVidia in my life and will never go back. We had similar problems on a computer we built:
AMD 64 3500+ S939
ASUS A8N-SLI Deluxe MB
ASUS 6600 GT - NVidia
2X512 PC3200 Dual Channel DDR
Antec case and power - the best!
Windows XP SP2
We ran PT Version 5 and it froze up during the 3D tests due to a problem with NVidia drivers. I have not checked the version of the video drivers but it is clear that we will need to replace them.
BTW, 98 is still a very performant OS and it is always handy to have a copy around.
